Cyber Security: Evolution of Attack Methods and Responses

Distributed denial of service attacks have been around for a long time, but the methods behind them have evolved. Traditionally, a DDoS attack overwhelmed the targeted Web site by using multiple systems to flood it with traffic. More recently, a new breed of smart attackers have achieved a similar impact using far fewer resources and much less traffic by aiming at just one target critical to a site’s functions. Efforts to resist the attacks and ensure business continuity have evolved as well, from boosting bandwidth and deploying mitigation hardware to detecting attacks very early and filtering out the malicious traffic.
