SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/17/15 -- In a first-of-its kind survey and research report commissioned by ClusterHQ and conducted by DevOps.com, it was revealed that 94 percent of organizations are using or investigating container technologies. Currently, only 38 percent of respondents reported using containers in production environments, but that number is projected to increase 69 percent over the next 12 months as organizations find new ways of addressing important barriers to adoption. It was also verified that Docker is overwhelmingly the container of choice, with 92% of respondents having used or investigated it, followed by LXC (32%) in a distant second, but still far ahead of Rocket (21%). DevOps.com, a central resource for DevOps education and community building, polled 285 respondents from companies ranging in size from small organizations with 1 to 500 employees (69%), to mid-size companies with 501-2,500 personnel (12%), all the way up to large enterprises with over 2,500 employees (19%), demonstrating that containers are being embraced by all businesses from the startup stage to globally dominant organizations.
Respondents came predominantly from development, operations, QA, DevOps and security teams. The survey revealed how container technologies are being used today, as well as research-based insights about where the industry is headed over the next year.
Concerns and Barriers to Container Adoption
Among the findings uncovered by the survey were insights into what respondents perceived to be the primary barriers to container adoption. When asked to rank several categories on a scale of "major barrier" to "no barrier," the following were considered to be major to moderate barriers:
Need for Container Data Management Revealed
Additional responses showed that data management capabilities are essential to the success of container strategies and that the vast majority of organizations want to run databases and other stateful services in containers.
Multiple Infrastructures Running Containers
Containers are known for portability and flexibility, the survey reveals that organizations are using them in different infrastructures but most frequently in on-premises data centers (57%), followed by Amazon Web Services (52%).
(Questions were multiple choice and allowed choosing all that apply; hence percentages exceed 100 in some cases.)
"In the history of computing, few technologies have emerged as explosively as containers. The over half a billion downloads of container software solutions in the past year led us to engage DevOps.com to dig into the specifics of how containers are truly being used in modern IT environments," said Mark Davis, CEO of ClusterHQ, developer of Flocker container data management software. "This survey confirms anecdotal evidence that ClusterHQ had previously gathered -- that organizations are being aggressive with container usage, yet today's container technology is no application deployment panacea because there are still barriers to universal adoption to overcome."
In addition to this news, ClusterHQ today announced the general availability of its Flocker 1.0 platform and a partnership with EMC. To learn more about Flocker 1.0 visit clusterhq.com/flocker; to learn more about the EMC integration visit clusterhq.com/2015/06/17/emc-partnership/.
During DockerCon 2015, June 22 - 23 in San Francisco, learn about ClusterHQ's Flocker 1.0 at Booth G8 and come hear Luke Marsden, CTO of ClusterHQ speak on Monday, June 22 at 2:50 PM PT.

About ClusterHQ
ClusterHQ builds container data management software that enables broader adoption of container technology in production environments. DevOps teams worldwide rely on ClusterHQ's open source Flocker software to meet the data portability requirements of distributed, microservices-based applications. Available for download at clusterhq.com/flocker, Flocker enables containers and their associated data volumes to be easily moved between servers as a single unit, a prerequisite for production operation of stateful application components in containers. Flocker facilitates widespread production deployment of containers for databases, queues and key value stores by making it simple and practical for entire distributed applications to be consolidated into an all-container development and operations environment. No matter where, or what, a container is running, Flocker gives DevOps teams operational freedom to quickly react to market conditions by relocating application containers in response to changing conditions, so that their business can innovate faster and be more responsive. Flocker increases the value of an organization's container investment and opens the door for a greater variety of mainstream enterprise use cases. Organizations can now embrace the portability and massive per-server density benefits of containers for stateful application services, enabling the creation of a new generation of microservices-based applications, and in some cases the replacement of virtual machines with containers. ClusterHQ provides the tools and services necessary for deploying and managing fully containerized stateful applications, simplifying IT processes and delivering on the advantages inherent in containers. We are the Container Data People.
