Ann Johnson will discuss the growing interest and need for data. Given the choice between knowing what's going on and not knowing, almost anyone will choose knowing. People will not, however, choose things that take a long time and are hard to understand. So the question of how to make people data driven is really a question of how to make data accessible. Ann will explain the barriers to data access and strategies for addressing them.

Alonzo Canada will reframe thoughts of data software development as a design challenge. He will discuss the importance of designing data products that are appealing and easy to understand, and not limited to technologists. Alonzo will discuss design methodologies taught at the Stanford D.School and practices that have been in designing interfaces for Samsung, Audi, and Yahoo. He will present metaphors and analogies to design UX elements that make data products feel familiar and new at the same time and speak on designing products for daily use that will appeal to everyone.

Bobby Johnson and Joseph Adler will discuss alternate strategies for data management, using raw event logs for analysis, skipping the normalization and aggregation steps required to build a traditional warehouse. They will discuss traditional warehouse architecture, its strengths and weaknesses along with the basic ideas behind event logging systems. They will also share their own experiences with traditional data warehouses and event based system. They will also discuss open source tools that can be used to build an event processing system which will include Apache Kafka, Apache Samza and Storm, Apache Hadoop and Druid.
