FAIRFAX, VA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/22/15 -- Smartphones have joined car keys, licenses and wallets as driving essentials in today's connected world. Wefi, the Mobile Data Analytics company, today released "Smartphone Usage Trends on U.S. Highways" infographic. Using its big data analytics platform, wefi analyzed data collected from over 70,000 devices driven over 3.5 million miles on six major interstates offering insights, including:

  • Approximately one-third (34%) of drivers/passengers use music streaming apps
    • Pandora is the most popular music streaming app with 34.9%
    • Google Play Music - 15.6%
  • 25% use video apps in the car
    • YouTube is the overwhelming favorite with 87%
    • Netflix - 11.2%
    • Hulu - 1%
    • HBO - less than 1%
  • Drivers who use navigation apps keep them active, on average, for 80% of the journey

The analysis and companion infographic also explored which carriers provide the best wireless speed on the selected interstates. T-Mobile customers benefit from the fastest connection on the I-495, I-95 and I-55. Verizon Wireless offers the speediest data connection on the I-405 and I-110, while AT&T beats the competition on the I-820.

Paper maps are merely a memory with navigation apps used for 80% of the driving. The analysis showed that while Google Maps is used more often, Waze loyalists remain inside the application for far longer periods of time.
