Doherty is responsible for the company's global brand and marketing strategy execution as well as Percona's training and educational programs and conferences.

Doherty has more than 17 years of experience building enterprise value for both start-up and Fortune 100 public and private companies in the technology, networking and telecommunication sectors. Over the past 11 years, he has authored seven books, including the "Networking Simplified" series published by Pearson Education.

Prior to Percona, Doherty was the senior vice president of marketing for Ixia, a leader in network test, visibility, security and virtualization solutions for the communications, where he transformed marketing by consolidating multiple departments into a single global organization, led the effort to rebrand the company, and drove the development of the company messaging as Ixia expanded its offering from pre-production test to production network visibility and security offerings. Before Ixia, Doherty was the chief marketing officer for Certes Networks, a provider of network encryption solutions for high performance, SDN and virtualized networks. He defined the overall communications strategy and brand identity for the company, led the strategic development of the company's cloud strategy and positioning, and was instrumental in the company's successful effort to raise successive rounds funding. Prior to joining Certes Networks, Doherty helped build a new marketing group within Symbol Technologies that drove revenue growth prior to the acquisition by Motorola. Before Symbol, Doherty was at Cisco Systems.

Doherty has a Master of Business Administration degree in General Management from Duke University, Fuqua School of Business, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from NC State University in North Carolina. Doherty also served in the United States Marine Corps.
