SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/11/15 -- PernixData, the leader in server-side storage intelligence, today announced that Charlotte Pipe, one of the largest makers of drain, waste and vent pipe and fittings in the U.S., has deployed PernixData FVP software to maximize the performance of the company's SAP environment by moving storage intelligence into high speed server flash. With FVP software, the company extended the life of its existing storage array, saving $190k in hardware upgrade costs.
Established in 1901, Charlotte Pipe is a family-owned company that operates more than 1,000,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Utah and Alabama.
Adam Mann, Charlotte Pipe's director of technology services, knew that the company's existing storage could not support emerging performance requirements for SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Transportation Management, and other strategic applications. Upgrading the array would be an expensive proposition, with uncertain results. As a result, he turned to FVP software.
FVP was installed on Charlotte Pipe's server blades with 400 GB SSDs. No changes were required to these devices, the company's applications, or the existing storage environment.
After deploying PernixData FVP software, Charlotte Pipe experienced significant day-to-day benefits. With the hit rate on the FVP cluster reaching over 90 percent during business hours, over 7 billion I/Os were offloaded from the SAN in just four months. As a result, the organization observed a 12x improvement in latency for SAP Business Warehouse and Transportation Management. In addition, with so much load removed from the shared storage environment, the performance of even the virtual machines not accelerated by FVP (e.g. those supporting SAP ERP Central Component) improved.
Decoupling performance from capacity introduced a sea change in Charlotte Pipe's infrastructure planning process. "This is going to mean a much lower investment in storage hardware going forward, making FVP a strategic investment for the company," said Mann. "We expect the requirements for the next hardware refresh to be very different."
